Russia Reports Successful Trial of Atomic-Propelled Storm Petrel Missile
Russia has tested the nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile, as reported by the state's top military official.
"We have executed a extended flight of a atomic-propelled weapon and it traversed a 14,000km distance, which is not the limit," Senior Military Leader Valery Gerasimov told President Vladimir Putin in a broadcast conference.
The low-altitude advanced armament, originally disclosed in recent years, has been described as having a theoretically endless flight path and the ability to avoid anti-missile technology.
International analysts have previously cast doubt over the weapon's military utility and Moscow's assertions of having effectively trialed it.
The national leader declared that a "final successful test" of the armament had been conducted in the previous year, but the statement lacked outside validation. A military journal quoted in the report states the missile has a flight distance of between 6,200 and 12,400 miles, allowing "the weapon to be based across the country and still be equipped to reach goals in the American territory."
