British Extends Methanol Toxicity Alert List with An additional 11 Nations

Toxic substance warning sign

British Foreign Office has placed 11 further nations to its official alert roster regarding the dangers of methanol contamination from contaminated beverages.

The expanded advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "an international surge in the frequency of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Only last month, authorities had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, after several high-profile events such as the tragic loss of six visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being warned that as little as tiny quantities of methanol can cause blindness or death within 12 to 48 hrs.

What is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?

Methanol is a toxic chemical commonly used in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. This substance is not designed for ingestion.

While it is generated during the production of spirits, licensed producers bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the purification method.

However in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and because it is flavorless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Official Guidance for Travelers

Government representative a senior official emphasized that every traveler should know the indicators of methanol contamination.

"While having drinks in foreign countries, stick to trusted places and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or free shots," Falconer said.

"Should anything feels off, like a hangover that's much more severe than typical or vision problems – get medical help fast."

The entire roster of countries noted as posing a risk of methanol contamination currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
